ACM MATERIAL GUIDE

“3mm ACM” is not a complete material specification.

Panels sold under the same general ACM description can differ materially in aluminum skin thickness, coating, core, stiffness and print behavior. We identify the construction we are selling and honor named-brand specifications.

ACM material specifications for sign production.

Compare the actual construction, not simply the logo on the carton. When evaluating MaxMetal, DIBOND or another defined ACM product, skin thickness, coating and core construction can change rigidity, handling, routing and the finished panel. “J-Bond” is also used loosely in parts of the sign trade as a generic name for ACM, so the term alone is not treated as a manufacturer specification.

Aluminum skin thickness.004, .006, .008 and .012-inch skins are not interchangeable descriptions. The skin is part of the specification.
Surface / coating systemA white face intended for general signage is not automatically the same as a coating optimized for direct digital printing.
Core and total thicknessThe PE core and overall construction influence flatness, stiffness and machining behavior.
Print suitabilityFor routine direct-UV work, the substrate must be validated with the actual print system rather than assumed compatible.

How our ACM choices are described.

Ordering descriptionNominal skinHow it is handled
Standard ACM — digital-print surface.006 in.Published standard production lane; manufacturer is not misrepresented as another brand.
Heavier-Skin Digital ACM.008 in.Published pricing is available in 3mm and 6mm; named-brand requirements remain project-specific.
MaxMetal DP.006 in.Named-brand option; supplied as MaxMetal when selected.
DIBOND.012 in.Named-brand/heavier-skin option; quoted to specification.
“J-Bond” / generic trade descriptionMust be definedTreated as ACM unless the buyer identifies an actual manufacturer/product specification.
Other specified ACMPer product specQuoted and supplied according to the actual named manufacturer/product specification.

Skin thickness alone does not determine which panel will print or machine best. A thinner-skin panel can be the better production choice for a particular print/cut workflow while a heavier-skin panel can provide greater panel robustness. Those are different attributes, not interchangeable brand claims.

Named-brand skin values are checked against current manufacturer data before publication: Maxmetal DP — 0.15 mm aluminum faces (~.006 in.) →   DIBOND — .012 in. aluminum facers →

Material transparency is part of the quote.

If we quote “standard ACM,” the order will identify the disclosed construction and print surface rather than implying a named brand. If the customer requires MaxMetal, DIBOND or another actual named manufacturer/product, the order identifies that specification. If a buyer says “J-Bond,” we clarify the required ACM construction when the term does not identify a unique product. A proposed substitution is an approval question, not a silent production change.

Oversize and 6mm work.

A true 48 × 96 finished routed panel may require stock larger than 48 × 96 so the tool can travel around the perimeter. Standard and heavier-skin 6mm ACM have published sheet prices; oversize stock, named brands and specialty constructions remain project-specific, rather than being treated as one generic “6mm” product.
